Troubleshooting & Glossary

The problems that come up most, what actually causes them, and the fastest fix. Plus a plain-English decoder for every codename in the app.

IF YOU ONLY READ ONE THING
Most bad results come from too much prompt, not too little. Try removing before you try adding.
10.01

The result ignores half my prompt

Usually too many competing instructions, not too few.

WHY IT HAPPENS

The model has a fixed attention budget. When your prompt piles on adjectives, three lighting cues, two camera angles and a mood board, the model quietly picks a few and drops the rest. It's not ignoring you; it's triaging.

HOW TO CONFIRM

You'll notice specific words never showing up in results — a colour you named, a prop you asked for, a camera angle you specified. That's the tell.

HOW TO FIX

Run Refine → Distill and remove any adjective that isn't earning its place. Then turn off Manifest switches you don't need. A shorter, sharper prompt is heard in full.

10.02

Results drift between generations

The segments you care about aren't locked.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Without locked segments, every render is a fresh roll. Even with the same prompt, small differences compound — face, pose, framing and lighting all shift a little each time.

HOW TO CONFIRM

Two renders of the same prompt look like siblings but not twins. If you were expecting the same shot with a small change, this is what's happening.

HOW TO FIX

Lock the segments you want preserved the moment you find a composition you like. Re-roll only what's left unlocked.

10.03

Output is too stylised

Turn stylize down, or switch on Style Raw.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Midjourney's default stylize value pushes results toward its house look. High stylize values push harder — more atmosphere, more painterliness, less faithfulness to what you actually described.

HOW TO CONFIRM

Faces look slightly painted, materials look slightly fantastical, lighting feels moodier than you asked for. Nothing's wrong; the dial is just up.

HOW TO FIX

Drop stylize toward the low end of the range or turn on Style Raw in the parameter deck. Raw keeps the model much closer to what you wrote.

10.04

Output is flat and too literal

Turn stylize up, or set a stronger Logic Gate.

WHY IT HAPPENS

The opposite problem. With stylize low or Raw on and no strong Logic Gate, the model has nothing to add beyond your literal words — you get a flat description rendered exactly.

HOW TO CONFIRM

The image looks correct but lifeless. Every element is there, but nothing has been designed.

HOW TO FIX

Push stylize up, or — better — set a more opinionated Logic Gate. A strong Design House, Fashion House or Artistic Influence gives the model something to design with.

10.05

Everything looks plasticky or CGI

Fix the material, not the adjectives. Then check your lighting.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Adjectives like 'realistic' or 'photorealistic' don't fix this — the model already thinks it's being realistic. The problem is almost always a weak material specification or lighting that's too even and too clean.

HOW TO CONFIRM

Surfaces look injection-moulded, highlights are too soft and uniform, and even 'realistic' in the prompt doesn't shift it.

HOW TO FIX

Replace vague adjectives with named materials — brushed aluminium, worn leather, wet asphalt. Then break the lighting — directional key, actual shadows. Real materials plus real light beats any amount of 'photoreal' in text.

10.06

I've run out of credits

Manual prompt building is free; copying the finished prompt costs one credit.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Credits are spent on AI work — Refine, Neural Link, the Inner Atelier, in-app rendering — and on copying a finalized prompt to the clipboard, which logs it to your history and project spine. Building prompts by hand with presets, styles, the parameter deck and Manifest switches costs nothing.

HOW TO CONFIRM

You can hit zero credits and still use most of the app. What you lose is the AI reasoning, in-app rendering, and the ability to copy a finalized prompt to the clipboard.

HOW TO FIX

Explore engines and presets freely. Save credits for refinement, Atelier sessions, and copying the final prompt. Note the 50 credits on signup is a one-time grant — not daily, not recurring — so plan accordingly, or move up a tier when you're doing real work.

// GLOSSARY

Plain-English decoder

A
Agent Integration#
The MCP server surface that lets an outside AI assistant read your history and usage as you. Studio tier; managed from the connect page.
ANIME_MATRIX_V1#
The anime and animation engine, tuned by studio rather than by generic style words. The ANIME mode in the app.
Apply#
Sends the sealed output from the Atelier back into your workstation as a prompt you can render.
ARCH_VIS_OS#
The exterior architecture engine — form, massing, cladding and site. The ARCH mode in the app.
Archetype Kit#
A small named library of plate components — Dial, Circuit, GridMicro, Signal, Topo, Chart, TypeSpecimen, Botanica, Heraldic, Molecule, Routes, Exploded, Board, CareGlyph — that the compositor arranges under layout rules.
Art Style#
The visual treatment — cinematic still, blueprint, editorial photo, and dozens more. Also nudges the parameter deck and negatives so the style actually renders.
AUTO_CRAFT_Σ8#
The exterior vehicle engine — bodywork, stance, surfacing and lighting signature. The AUTO mode in the app.
AUTO_INT_SYS#
The vehicle interiors engine — cabins, seats, dashboards and trim. The AUTO-INT mode in the app.
Autocraft#
The Master responsible for form, surfacing and construction. Produces a Form Covenant that describes how the thing is built.
C
chaos#
Midjourney's variation dial across a single grid. Higher chaos makes the four images in a grid look more different from each other.
CHAR_LABS_V1#
The character engine — people and creatures, filtered through a chosen artist's visual language. The CHARACTER mode in the app.
Clear-zone#
The exclusion area around a title block where captions and secondary marks are not allowed to land. Enforced by the composition pass.
CMF#
Colour, Material and Finish. The industry term for the surface decisions of a designed object — and the name of the material engine.
CMF_DESIGN_OS#
The colour, material and finish engine — the material specialist mode, which can also export a Spec Sheet. The CMF mode in the app.
Coherence#
The rule layer that keeps random and suggested picks anatomically and contextually consistent — it filters impossible combinations instead of correcting them after the fact.
CONCEPT_CORE_V1#
The hard-surface concept engine — mechs, craft and industrial machinery. The CONCEPT mode in the app.
Confidence Check#
A five-axis score — subject, style, camera, light, composition — that the Copilot computes for the current prompt, with one-line reasons per axis.
Credit Ledger#
The signed, append-only record of every credit change on an account. Debits are negative, grants are positive, and each row stamps the running balance_after.
Credits#
The unit consumed by AI actions — Refine, Neural Link, the Inner Atelier, in-app rendering, and copying a finalized prompt to the clipboard. The controls themselves are free to use.
cref#
A Midjourney character reference — an image whose character you want your result to keep.
D
DEEP#
The Atelier's full-reasoning mode. More passes, richer diagnosis, more credits — for work that deserves it.
Density Guard#
The rule that automatically caps caption count when the headline is oversized, keeping plates readable at thumbnail size.
Direction#
A choice offered by a Master during the Choose stage. You pick one and it's added to the Spine.
DIRECTOR_SUITE#
The manual cinematic engine — fifteen fields, nothing auto-filled. The DIRECTOR mode in the app.
E
Early Access#
The Cohort 01 signup page. Register interest by email to get new features and tier grants before general release.
F
FASHION_ENGINE_V1#
The fashion engine — garments, styling and editorial imagery. The FASHION mode in the app.
FAST#
The Atelier's quick-reasoning mode. Fewer passes, faster answers, cheaper in credits.
FLASH_RENDER_SYS#
The in-app renderer — generates images directly inside the workstation. The FLASH mode in the app.
FLUX_POSTER_Σ9#
The poster engine — graphic layouts with real hierarchy and typography. The POSTER mode in the app.
Form Covenant#
Autocraft's sealed output — the description of how the subject is constructed.
G
GRAPHIC#
The computational plate studio. A design surface with a live SVG visualiser, industry-anchored presets, archetype components and batch export.
H
Handover#
The moment control passes from one Master to the next, carrying the Spine forward.
Honest Actions#
The Copilot's rule of engagement: it reads, analyses, compares and scores, but it does not silently change the workstation. All deck changes are explicit clicks by you.
I
Image Testament#
Lumen's sealed output — the description of how the subject is lit and framed.
Inner Atelier#
The deep-reasoning workspace. Chains three Masters — Autocraft, Lumen and Sigma — through a Bring, Diagnose, Choose, Make, Seal flow.
INTERIOR_OS_V1#
The interior spaces engine — rooms, materials, furniture and daylight. The ARCH-INT mode in the app.
L
Locked / Active / Conflict / Rejected#
The four states a direction or artifact can be in on the Spine. Locked is committed; Active is live; Conflict flags an inconsistency; Rejected has been ruled out.
Logic Gate#
The single biggest lever in any engine. It injects a whole body of design language — Design House, Fashion House, Architect, Studio — not just a name.
Lumen#
The Master responsible for light, camera and image. Produces an Image Testament that describes how the thing is seen.
M
Manifest (Atelier)#
The finished, model-ready artifact that Sigma seals at the end of an Atelier session. Not the same as the workstation Manifest switches.
Manifest (workstation)#
The five on/off switches — Subject, Style, Details, Scene, Camera — that decide which sections of your prompt get built. Not the same as the Atelier Manifest.
Master#
One of the Atelier's three specialists. Each Master owns a stage of the session and speaks its own vocabulary.
Materials#
The surface story — paint, fabric, cladding or finish, depending on the engine. Survives prompt tweaks better than adjectives do.
N
Neural Refiner#
The engine behind Neural Link — the model that actually rewrites your prompt when you Refine.
no (negative)#
Midjourney's negative prompt. Tells the model what you specifically don't want in the image.
O
oref#
A Midjourney omni reference — a broader reference that carries multiple aspects of an image into your result.
P
Plate Visualiser#
The live SVG canvas inside GRAPHIC mode that draws the current plate deterministically from the active preset and seed.
Poster Forge#
Sigma's poster sub-workspace — recipes, density, layout character and typography zones. Architect tier and above.
Prompt Target#
The model your prompt is aimed at — Midjourney, Gemini, Flux or SDXL. Determines the shape of the final prompt.
Prorated Upgrade#
A mid-cycle upgrade order that charges only the difference between what you already paid and the higher plan's cost for the remaining period.
R
RACK#
The VST-style view of a control group — rotary knobs, XY pads and LED steppers instead of a grid of labelled tiles. Same values, different instrument.
Re-roll#
Regenerate only the unlocked parts of your prompt. Locked segments stay put.
Reconciliation#
A corrective adjustment on the credit ledger, written to a separate audit table with a reason. The mechanism for fixing a discrepancy without a silent backfill.
S
Seal#
Sigma's final step — locks the session into a Manifest that's model-ready.
Segment#
A labelled part of your prompt — Style, Details, Scene, Camera, Finish. The prompt display shows your prompt broken into segments so you can read each one on its own.
Segment Lock#
Freezes a segment so re-rolls and refinements leave it alone. Locked segments are preserved word for word.
Selection Bridge#
The mechanism the Copilot uses to read the currently selected Gallery render — prompt, parameters, engine, locks — as its working context.
Semantic Heatmap#
A colour overlay on your prompt showing which words the model is actually weighting. Architect tier and above.
Send to Atelier#
A Copilot action that opens a brand-new Inner Atelier session pre-filled with the current prompt as its seed brief, without touching existing sessions.
Sequence Gate#
An LED in the SEQUENCE // strip that mutes or unmutes a whole control group. Muted groups are skipped by randomization and left out of the prompt.
Sigma#
The Master responsible for typography, layout and the final sealed Manifest. Owns the Poster Forge inside the Atelier.
Spec Sheet#
The CMF engine's exportable document — materials, colours, processes, finishes, a sustainability score and a manufacturing feasibility read. Architect tier and above.
sref#
A Midjourney style reference — an image whose visual style you want your result to inherit.
Style Raw#
A Midjourney mode that turns off most of the house style. Keeps results much closer to what you literally wrote.
stylize#
Midjourney's stylistic push. Low values stay close to your prompt; high values add atmosphere and painterliness at the cost of literal accuracy.
T
Test Role#
An admin-only per-account flag that simulates any tier's gates and pricing surfaces without changing the real plan or real credits.
The Spine#
The project's memory across an Atelier session — the shared record of choices, directions and constraints all three Masters read from.
The Vault#
Your personal library of saved prompts, styles and references inside the app.
THE_ARCHITECT#
The pro tier. Unlocks Atelier DEEP mode, Poster Forge, CMF Spec Sheets, Semantic Heatmap and high-resolution FLASH rendering.
THE_EXPLORER#
The free tier. 50 credits on signup, one time, no card needed.
THE_OPERATOR#
The entry paid tier. Unlocks Director mode, the Neural Link Copilot, Inner Atelier FAST reasoning, standard image generation and full prompt history.
THE_STUDIO#
The top tier. Everything in Architect, plus the MCP API and the highest fair-use limits.
V
Visual DNA#
Extracts a prompt from an image you upload — deconstructs the picture into subject, materials, style and camera.
W
weird#
Midjourney's aesthetic-drift dial. Pushes results toward unusual and unexpected treatments — useful for exploration, not for locked shots.
